The Psychology Behind Colour

As well as accentuating pieces of art, colour is also a powerful communication tool. Something as simple as colour can affect our perception and mood. Colour can go as far as affecting blood pressure, metabolism, and eyestrain. The way this works is fascinating and will be explained in more detail in the following article:

Colours have been split up into different elements to understand them better. Warm colours include red, yellow and orange and these encourage feelings ranging from warmth and comfort to anger and hostility. Whereas cool colours such as blue, purple and green are perceived as calm colours but can also portray feelings of sadness.

Colourology is a holistic treatment used to heal. The colour yellow is used to stimulate the nerves and purify the body, orange to heal the lungs and increase energy levels, blue to soothe illness and treat pain, indigo to alleviate skin problems and finally, red to stimulate the body and mind and to increase circulation.

Something as simple as colour can affect our perception and mood.

However, most psychologists are sceptical about colour psychology as they have deemed it to be exaggerated, or the effects are found to only be temporary. Nevertheless, further research has found that colour can affect people in more surprising ways. Examples of this include: red allows people to react with greater speed and force which may be useful in athletic activities, blue coloured street lights can lead to reduced crime and warm coloured placebo pills were found to be more effective than cool coloured placebo pills in a study.

Furthermore, it has been found that when students are exposed to the colour red before a test has been shown to have a negative impact on their performance.

Did you know colour can also have a massive impact on your purchases? The colour of your products can affect the way you are perceived by others. The colour black can be described as a ‘powerful’ colour which accounts for why luxury cars are usually black as the colour can also be described as mysterious and sexy. Whereas, the colour white can feel fresh and clean and encourages a sense of youth.
